KINDS OF THE SENTENCE :
There are five kinds of the sentence. These are as follows:
1. Assertive Sentences
2. Interrogative Sentences
3. Imperative Sentences
4. Exclamatory Sentences
5. Optative Sentences
Let us understand each kinds of the sentences in more detail.
1. Assertive Sentence (Statements):
The sentences which state or declare something, are called Assertive sentences. These are of two types:
(i) Affirmative Sentence : The assertive sentence which makes a positive sense or statement is called an affirmative sentence.
Examples: 1. My father is a doctor.
2. The tall boy was a good player.
(ii) Negative Sentence:
The assertive sentence which makes a negative sense or statement is called a negative sentence.
Examples:
1. He does not write a letter.
2. None of these girls were present in the class.
Note * An assertive sentence has full stop (.) at its end.
2. Interrogative Sentences:
The sentences which ask questions are called Interrogative sentences. Generally these sentences begin with helping verb and wh-type words such as - where, who, whom, which, when or How and these sentences have mark of Interrogation (?) at their end.
Examples :
1. Is he a king?
2. How do you do?
3. Imperative Sentences:
The sentences in which we express order (command), advice, proposal, give suggestion or do some request are called Imperative sentences. In such kind of sentences, generally subject 'you' is not used and they also end in full stop (.).
Examples:
1.Go there. (Order)
2. Please help me. (Request)
4. Exclamatory Sentences :
The sentences in which we express sudden feelings and emotions are called Exclamatory sentences. These sentences have mark of exclamation (!) at the end of exclamatory word and sometime at their end.
Examples :
1. Hurrah! we have won the match.
2. How beautiful the rose is!
5.Optative Sentences:
The sentences in which good or bad wishes, desire, thanks, congratulation, good bye, etc. are expressed are called Optative sentences. These sentences also have mark of exclamation (!) at their end.
Examples:
1.May our parents live long!
Parts of A Sentence:
Each sentence is made up of two parts. These are Subject and Predicate.
Read the given sentences and know their parts.
Subject Predicate
1. Mother cooks food.
2. A boy was going to school.
3.An old man was sleeping.
In the above sentences, the subject part contains the doer of various actions. Thus doers are subjects and actions are predicates.
What is a Subject?
The first part of a sentence from where the verb begins and about which the action denotes, is called the subject. The subjects are generally nouns, pronouns and determiners along with adjectives. In assertive sentences the subject is placed before the predicate part. Example: She likes reading.
Read the given sentences:
1.Come here.
2.Do not make noise .
3.Help the poor people.
In these sentences the subject 'you' is implied but it is not stated. The predicate parts of these sentences are 'come here', 'do not make noise' and 'help the poor people' respectively.
What is a Predicate?
In simple words, something said about the subject is called the predicate. The sentences or phrases which begins with actions or verbs and completes the meaning of the sentence are called the predicate.
Example: Give this to her.
