SHORT STORY ON FRIENDSHIP

In our day to day life we often discuss about our best friends, write long stories, status, tag them, text them, love them, pen special notes for them ,host surprise parties, birthdays, buy gifts, lend money, lie on behalf of them, bunk school,  lectures, classes, and what not you name it! I hope all of us will agree on the fact that friendship is the most beautiful relationship one can have in life. If you have good friends then you don't need anybody to make you feel good and better about yourself.
 

 Even in school, if teacher asks us to write about something the first thing that comes to our minds are our best friends. Isn't it?
We tend to forget to write about our parents but we never forget our friends.

But have you ever pondered upon this question and asked yourself ?
I assume you haven't. So let me ask a few.
How do you know whether the person  you are referring to as your 'best friend' feels the same about you ?
Are they truly your "Best Friends Forever" or  "Best Fake Friends Forever? "

No! I am not trying to instigate you against your best friends. There are people who get exceptionally great friends and become friends for life and that's truly amazing. I mean having someone to rely on ,to share your things out, show your vulnerability without the fear of being judged is pure heaven.

But not everyone is same. There are  people  who exists to drain you up both mentally and emotionally. And yeah not everyone is lucky in friendship!

           PART -1 

"THE SELFISH FRIEND "

Harry was a fair, tall, sympathetic, generous and a taciturn teen who just completed his schooling and was soon to be enrolled in the United Comprehensive University to pursue Bachelor's degree in Commerce. He was very good in mathematics and always dreamt of pursuing Master's degree, after he completed his graduate. He didn't had many friends but had one best friend named Michael. 

Michael was also a fair guy with blue eyes blonde hair and a decent height. He was a very blunt kind of a person. He was good in games and sports and hence decided to get enrolled  in the United Comprehensive University pursuing Bachelor's in Physical Health  & Education . 

It was Sunday and Harry and Michael were having a discussion over the phone.
Harry : " Let's go on Thursday, till then I will make a copy of all the required documents. What say?"
Michael: "I already made a copy, let's go on Tuesday." 
Harry : "But I need some time to collect all the required documents and fill up the online registration form before getting enrolled. 
Have you paid the online registration fee? "
Michael : "Yeah I did. "
Harry : "When? Why you didn't informed  me? "
Michael : " Oh! what's there to inform ? When we already know we have to do online registration?" 
Harry : "But I thought we will be doing it together"..
Michael: " There's still time you can do it now. "
Harry: " You could've waited or at least informed me..."
Michael: " I thought you might have done it already ."
Harry : "No I didn't."
Michael : " Never mind you can do it now.. And let's go on Tuesday. "
Harry : " Sorry I don't think I would make it on Tuesday. Let's go on Thursday. "
Michael: "Alright."

By Wednesday, Harry submitted all the necessary details and filled the online registration form.
In the evening he called his friend Michael. Harry was thrilled to join the university and couldn't wait any longer. 

Harry : "I submitted the online registration form today itself and can't wait for tomorrow morning. I think we should reach the university by 11am so that it would be less cramped. What you think? "
Michael : "Umm yeah you can go. " 
Harry : "What? You are not coming ? Is there any problem? "
Michael : "No."  
Harry : "Then what happened? Have you thought of joining somewhere else? "
Michael : "No. It's not like that. "
Harry : "Then what's the matter? "
Michael: "I already got enrolled on Tuesday. "
Harry : "Whaat? "
Michael : " Yeah I went with some friends. "
Harry : " Why you didn't bothered to inform me? "
Michael : "Oh! It went all of a sudden. They called and suggested to do it on Tuesday . Don't worry I will come with you."

Harry : "Alright."

Next day, both went together and Harry also got enrolled.
First few weeks went all good for Harry.
He met James and Oliver in his commerce class. They were best friends since their childhood days . Harry used to sit with them in the class but in the lunch period would go back to Michael. James and Oliver never forced Harry to get along with them.
Harry only considered Michael as his best friend and he never bothered to make new friends.

Michael on the other hand was busy making new friends and adjusted himself quite well in the new squad.
It was lunch time and Harry as usual called Michael.
Harry : " Where are you Mike? I am standing near the stationary shop. Come fast. "
Michael : "Oh! I am at the canteen. Come downstairs. "
Harry : "Oh okay! "

Harry went downstairs and saw Michael engaged in fun conversation with his new friends.
Michael: "Come Harry, meet my new friends. "
Harry  : "Hello.. Nice to meet you all. 
I am feeling too hungry.. Let's order something. "
Michael : " We finished already.. You can have your lunch ."  
Harry was nonplussed and felt a slight awkward. 
Harry : "Oh ok. "

Harry ordered himself some Chinese food and offered others to have some. 

Michael's friends : " We are already full.. Thanks. "  
Harry offered the food to Michael.
Michael : "I am also full can't even take a bite ..Sorry. "
Harry started having the noodles.
" We have to submit our practical notebook. We'll catch you later soon", Michael said and left the canteen with his friends. Harry was upset and didn't replied. He didn't finished his lunch and went back to the classroom. 

Several weeks passed. It was Teacher's Day. Students from every department organized some program and functions for their teachers.
Students from commerce department too organized a small function for their respective teachers.
After the function, Harry called Michael and asked his whereabouts.
Michael : "I am inside the classroom.. wait until the bell goes. I will be right back.. "

Harry went to the stationary shop to buy some notebooks. After a while he again waited near Michael's classroom. He waited for almost an hour and saw the students coming out of the classroom. His eyes searched for Michael but couldn't find him anywhere. 

Harry called Michael. Michael didn't responded. Harry again tried to call his friend two - three times.
This time Michael's friend received the call. 

Harry : "Hello Mike where are you? "
George : "Hello. This is George speaking."
Harry : "Can I speak to Michael please? "
George : "He is swimming in the pool. "
Harry : "Swimming? Where are you all? "
George: "In the Beverly House!"
Harry : "Beverly house? Where is it? "
George : "It is the name of my residence. "
Harry : "But Michael was in the classroom right? "
George : " Yeah that was almost 2 hours back. After the program we went straight to our house. "

Harry was clueless and went his home.
Next day Harry like usual waited for his friend in the lunch period. Michael didn't came. Harry went alone and ate his lunch.
In the evening. Harry called Michael. 

Harry : "Hello Mike How you doing? "
Michael : "Hi Harry What's up!"

Harry : "Nothing much. It's been 2-3 days we haven't met ..I hope all is well with you? "

Michael : "Yeah  absolutely my friend! "
Harry : " That's good to know .. May I ask you something? "
Michael : "Yeah, sure! "

Harry : "Why you don't wait for me during the lunch period and after class? Harry continued, Don't you know you are my only best friend? "

Michael : "Oh! how stupid question you are asking Harry. Don't you know I am in Physical education and you are in commerce class? 
I have my own friends and own schedule.. "
Harry : " But we can meet in the lunch period right? Why don't you wait for me these days? "
Michael : " Because I have got some friends to hang out with. I can't wait for you all the time ....... 
I think you should also make some new friends and have your lunch ..... "

Harry couldn't say anything.
He went to the bedroom to sleep, but couldn't. He tossed and turned all night.
Next day  Harry went alone to the university. His eyes looked puffy with pain. He entered the classroom with his head down and silently sat on the last bench.
James noticed Harry. 

James : "Did you noticed him? "
Oliver : "Yeah I did. His eyes looked puffy. "
James and Oliver called Harry and asked him to sit with them .
Harry was perplexed. He couldn't decide whether he should make new friends or just stay alone. There was a lonely look in his eyes, just empty like a void and puzzling like a maze.  He couldn't utter a word. His lips were trembling as if he was about to cry.
