What is a Noun?
In simple words, noun means naming words. All the naming words of persons, animals, places, things and qualities are called nouns.
Define Noun.
The noun is the name of a person, place, animal, thing or quality.
Examples:
Name of persons as : Stella, Ronald, Harry etc.
Name of animals as : dog, cat, hen etc.
Name of places as : school, garden, state etc.
Name of qualities as: honesty, kindness, bravery etc.
KINDS OF THE NOUN:
There are five kinds of the noun. They are as follows:
1. Proper Noun
2. Common Noun
3. Collective Noun
4. Abstract Noun
5. Material Noun
Let us understand each kinds of the noun in detail.
1. What is a Proper noun?
The noun which describes the name of a particular person, place or thing is called a proper noun.
Examples :
Names of persons: Sophia, Henry, John etc.
Names of places: Australia, college, hospital etc.
Names of things: The Ramayana, The Times of India etc.
Apart from these, the names of aeroplanes , rivers, trees, ships, dams, mountains, hills, seas, oceans, lakes, months of a year, days of a week, festivals, power stations etc. are Proper nouns.
Always remember Proper noun begin with capital letter.
2 . What is Common noun?
The common name given to a person, place or a thing which is of the same type is called a common noun.
Examples:
man, woman, boy, girl, dog, cat, pencil, book, chair, village, garden, school etc.
3. What is a Collective noun?
The collective name of persons or things is called a collective noun.
Examples:
team, crowd, class, library, bunch etc.
Description of some collective nouns:
Crowd - is a collection of people.
Bunch- is a collection of grapes or keys.
Class- is a collection of students.
4. What is an Abstract noun?
The noun which refers the name of quality, action and state is called an abstract noun.
Examples:
Qualities- bravery, honesty
Actions - anger, love
State- young, poverty
Abstract nouns are feelings so we cannot touch or see them. For example we cannot touch or see love. It is felt only by persons and animals.
5. What is Material noun?
The material noun is the name of the substance of which things are made.
Examples:
Milk, water, oil, gold etc.
MODERN CLASSIFICATION OF THE NOUN
The noun is classified as :
1. Countable Nouns and
2.Uncountable Nouns.
Now what are Countable nouns?
The noun which can be counted is called a countable noun. Proper noun, common noun and collective nouns are countable nouns.
Examples:
Ronald, California, girl, class, etc.
What are Uncountable nouns?
The noun which cannot be counted in number is called an Uncountable noun. Uncountable noun does not have its plural form.
Examples: honesty, kindness, water etc.
