THE PRONOUN AND ITS KINDS
Read the following sentences carefully and compare.
1. Robert is an intelligent student.
Or He is an intelligent student.
2. Summer is a good player of tennis.
Or She is a good player of tennis.
In the sentence 1, Robert is the name of a person so it is an example of a noun and 'He' is used for it which means that 'He' is a Pronoun.
Likewise in sentence 2, Summer is the name of a person so it is an example of a noun and 'She' is used for it therefore 'She' is also an example of a Pronoun.
What is a Pronoun?
In simple words, the word which is used in place of a noun is called a Pronoun.
KINDS OF THE PRONOUN:
There are seven kinds of the pronoun which are as follows:
1. Personal Pronoun
2. Demonstrative Pronoun
3. Interrogative Pronoun
4. Relative Pronoun
5. Reflexive Pronoun
6. Emphatic Pronoun
7. Possessive Pronoun
Now, let us read each kinds of the pronoun in details.
1. What is a Personal Pronoun?
The pronouns which are used for different persons or things then such pronouns are called the Personal Pronouns.
Personal Pronouns are of three types. These are:
(a) Pronouns Of First Person:
The persons speaking are called the Pronouns of the first person.
Examples: I, me, my, mine, we, our, us and ours.
(b)Pronouns Of Second Person:
The persons spoken to are called the Pronouns of the second person.
Examples: You, your and yours.
(c) Pronouns Of Third Person:
The persons spoken about are called the Pronouns of the third person.
Examples: He, She, It, They, Their, Them, His, Her and Him.

FORMS OF PERSONAL PRONOUNS-

Thou Thee Thy, Thine
3rd He Him His, His

They Them Their, Theirs
Note: 'It' is used for non living things, animals, birds and babies.
Examples:
1. It is my purse. ( non- living)
2. It is my baby. (baby)
3. It is a lion. ( animal)
4.It is a peacock. ( bird)
Read the given sentences and note the use of personal pronouns carefully.
1. I do my work.
2. You do your work.
3. She does her work.
4. We do our work.
5. They do their work.
2. What is a Demonstrative Pronoun?
The pronoun which demonstrates towards someone or something is called a demonstrative pronoun.
Examples:
1. This is your car.
2. That is my house.
3. These are our computer-sets.
4. Those are ripe mangoes.
In the above sentences the words This, That, These and Those indicate towards the nouns car, house, computer-sets and mangoes so all these are examples of Demonstrative pronouns.
Note: In case the noun coming just after this, that, these and those then it will be called an adjective not a pronoun.
Read these sentences-
1. This car is yours.
2. That house is mine.
3. These computer-sets are ours.
4. Those mangoes are ripe.
In the above sentences car is placed just after this, house is placed just after that, computer-sets just after these and mangoes just after those so here This, That, These and Those are Demonstrative Adjectives.
3. What is a Interrogative Pronoun?
The pronoun which asks the question is called an Interrogative Pronoun.
Examples:
1. Who are you?
2. Whose bag is this?
3. What is your good name?
4. Which is your car?
5. Whom do you want to meet?
In the above sentences the words Who, Whose, What, Which and Whom are different type of questions so all these words are Interrogative Pronouns.
4. What is a Relative Pronoun?
The pronoun which is used to show the relation with the noun used in the sentence is called Relative pronoun.
Examples:
1. I saw a lady who was crying for help.
2. This is the car which I want to buy.
3. This is the girl whom I met last year.
4. That is the man whose shirt was torn.
In the above sentences the words who, which, whom and whose relate with their nouns and the words which have come just before them are called antecedents. For example lady is an antecedent of who in sentence 1,car is an antecedent of which in sentence in 2 and so on.
Note: Who, Whose and Whom are used for persons while Which is used for things, That is used for animals and persons.
5. What is a Reflexive Pronoun?
The pronoun which is used in place of noun and itself is doing the work of subject as well as object is known as Reflexive Pronoun.
Examples:
1. I stood for myself .
2. You did homework yourself.
3. He hurt himself.
In the above sentences the word myself, yourself, himself are examples of Reflexive pronouns.
6. What is an Emphatic Pronoun?
The pronoun which emphasizes doing the work itself is called an Emphatic Pronoun.
Examples:
1. He himself did his homework.
2. You yourself will do it.
3. She herself went there.
4. They themselves cooked their food.
In the above sentences the words himself, yourself, herself and themselves are examples of Emphatic pronouns.
Q. What is the difference between Reflexive and Emphatic pronouns?
The simple difference is the location of words which are made by adding self or selves. If these words are used after verb then they become Reflexive pronouns. If these words are used before verbs or just after the subjects then they become Emphatic pronouns.
7. What are Possessive Pronoun?
The pronoun which shows the possession is called a Possessive pronoun.
Examples:
1.This book is mine.
2.That pen is yours.
3. Those bags are hers.
In the above sentences word 'mine' stands for 'my', 'yours' for 'of your' and 'hers', for 'of her' respectively so all these words are examples of Possessive pronouns.
