THE GERUND

THE GERUND
Read the given sentences:
1. Walking in the morning is good for health. 
2. I like reading novels. 
3. He began playing. 
In the above sentences , the words walking, reading and playing are made of joining 'ing' to walk, read and play verbs. Thus, 
Gerund = 1st form verb + ing. 
 
What is Gerund? 
Gerund is a form of verb that have 'ing' at its end. 
It is used as a subject / an object of a verb. It is also known by the name of Verbal Noun as it has the force of a noun and a verb. 

USE OF GERUND :
1. As a subject:
Examples- 
(a) Walking is good for health. 
(b) Seeing is believing. 
In these sentences walking and seeing are gerund and are used as subjects of the sentences. 

2. As an object of a verb:
Examples- 
(a) I love knitting. 
(b) Stop laughing. 
In these sentences knitting and laughing are object gerunds. 

3. As a complement of verb : 
Examples- 
(a) His weakness is  smoking regularly. 
(b) What I like is making fool! 
In these sentences the verb 'is' and 'like' are incomplete without gerunds so, smoking and making are used as complements of verbs. 

4. As an object complement:
Examples- 
(a) It is no use running after the bus. 
(b) It was no use of calling him now.
In these sentences gerunds 'running' and 'calling' are used as object complements. 

FORMATION OF GERUND - 

Gerund is formed by adding 'ing' to the first form of the verb. 
Examples - 
run + ing = running
play + ing = playing
walk + ing = walking 
talk + ing = talking
go + ing = going
sing + ing = singing
swim + ing = swimming
Sleep+ ing = sleeping 
read + ing = reading

NOTICE WRITING

What is Notice Writing?  A notice is a written or printed announcement which is written in order to inform a large number of people about some events, functions or programs.  The announcement could be anything such as an upcoming event, competition, lost and found notice or just a simple information.  Notice is generally written in a formal tone and to the point. THE THIRTEENTH BULLET    The mountainous countryside of Owari enjoyed a peaceful existence. The villagers felled trees and burned charcoal, which they would carry over the narrow trails to the nearest towns. Hunters were successful here, for there was plenty of game.
