THE VERB AND ITS KINDS


THE VERB AND ITS KINDS 

Read the given sentences: 
1. He is my son. 
2. He goes to school everyday. 

In these sentences, the following parts are predicates:
1.is my son. 
2. go to school everyday. 
The predicate part of every sentences begin with some doing words (actions or state) and all these actions are called verbs. 

What is a verb? 
A word which denotes an action is called a verb. 
Examples:
1.He writes a letter. 
2. Mother cooks food. 
The underlined words 'writes' and 'cooks' are verbs because they denote actions. 

KINDS OF VERB: 
There are four kinds of verb:

1. Linking Verb 
2. Auxiliary Verb 
3. Intransitive Verb
4. Transitive Verb

1. Linking Verb
Read the given sentences : 
(a) He is my brother. 
(b) We are  students. 
(c) She looks happy. 
(d) Honey tastes  sweet. 

In the above sentences the words 'is', 'are', 'looks',  and 'tastes' are used to complete the meanings of brother, students, happy and sweet, so all these are linking verbs. 

Now read the following sentences:
1. The teacher is. 
2. Father and son were
3. She sees
4. I seem
 
In the above sentences the verb 'is', 'were', 'sees', and 'seem' do not need any objects to make their meanings clear. These words do not show any action as well as possession, so these are incomplete verbs or verbs of incomplete predication. 

Examples of main linking verbs are : Be, is, am, are, was, were, has, have, had, become, seem, appear, look, taste. 

2. Auxiliary Verb:
When the verbs be, is, was, were, am, are, has, have, had, do, did, does are used with some main verbs, then they are called Auxiliary verbs or Helping verbs. 
Examples:
1. He does not go to school. 
2. We are  not going on holidays. 
3. She is  teaching me. 
4. Has he seen the Red Fort? 

Modal Auxiliary Verb:
The verbs will, shall, can, could, must, ought, need, may, might, should, would , has to, have to and had to are used with main verbs. 
Examples:
1. She will  go to the party. 
2. I  shall  do my work. 
3. May  I come in Sir? 
4. Could  you please lend me your book? 

3. Intransitive Verb: 
The verb which does not need an object or complement to complete its meaning is called an Intransitive verb. 
Examples: 
1.She cries. 
2. The sun shines. 
3. He laughs. 
4. The boys work. 

In the above sentences the verb cries, shines, laughs and work do not need any object or complement to complete their meanings , so these verbs are Intransitive verbs. 

4. Transitive Verb:
The verb which needs an object or complement to complete its meaning is called a Transitive verb. 
Examples:

1. He bought  two shirts. 
2. She taught  me very much. 
3. They wrote  letters. 
4. He delivered a speech. 

In the above sentences the verbs 'bought', 'taught', 'wrote' and 'delivered' need objects to comply their meanings so all these verbs are transitive verbs.
