WHAT IS PREPOSITION? HOW TO USE IT CORRECTLY?

 THE PREPOSITION AND ITS CORRECT USE

What is a Preposition? 
Preposition is a word which is used before a noun or a pronoun to describe their relation with other parts of speech in a sentence. 
Point to note * [ A preposition is followed by a noun and never followed by a verb. ]

Read the given sentences below:
1. The mango tree is in the field. 
2. There is a cow under the tree. 
3.The sparrow is sitting on the branch of the tree. 
In the above sentences, the words 'in', ' under', and 'on' are Prepositions. These words or prepositions show different situations of nouns and pronouns. 

HOW TO USE  PREPOSITIONS CORRECTLY? 
 (i) Use of At:
'At' is used for stationary position, point of time, point for precise time, small place. 
Examples:
1. The train is at the station. (Stationary position) 
2. He goes to school at 9 a. m. (Point of time) 
3. We live at New Delhi. (Small town) 

(ii) Use of In:
'In' is used for months, year, centuries, long periods, big cities, etc. 
Examples:
1. They live in Dubai. 
2. I was born in 1965.
3. We shall go on a tour in the month of December. 
Some other use of In:
1. Are you in trouble? 
2. Are you in the wrong? 
3. His father is blind in the right eye. 

(iii) Use of On:
'On' is used before the names of days of week, months and dates, surface, movement and stationary. 
Examples: 
1. We do not go to dance class on Sunday. 
2. He was born on 5th June, 1990.
3. The book is on the table. 

(iv) Use of Into:
'Into' is used for movement. 
Examples:
1. The cat jumped into the sofa. 
2. He put a handkerchief into his pocket. 

(v) Use of Above and Over:
'Above' and 'Over' both mean higher than and hence are used for covering, on the other side of across. 'Over' is used for lunch, meal, tea, etc. 
Examples:
1. The helicopter was hovering over the building. 
2. The train passed over the bridge. 
3. The guests had a chat over the lunch. 
4. She will meet you at the above address. 
5. The aeroplane was hovering above the park. 

(vi) Use of Since and For :
'Since' and 'For' both are used for showing time. 'For' is used for period of time- for five months, for five years, for a long time. 
On the other hand, 'Since' is used for point of time - since 1 o'clock, since birth, since evening, etc. 
Examples:
1. They have been living here for three weeks. 
2. He had been teaching us since morning. 
3. I have been waiting for him since 10 o'clock. 
4. It has been raining for two hours. 
Some other use of 'For:
1. He does not care for drinking. 
2. I am waiting for you. 
3. They sold their bungalow for Rs. 10 lakhs. 
 
(vii) Use of From:
'From' is used for separation. 
Examples: 
1. He comes here from Kerala daily. 
2. Ronald and Harry are from America. 
3. Butter is made from milk. 
4. I shall go to college from next month. 

(viii) Use of With:
'With' is used for instrument and having with. 
Examples:
1. He wrote a letter with a pen. 
2. She goes to market with her friends. 
3. Mother cut vegetables with a knife. 
Some other uses of With :
1. She writes with a ball pen. 
2. I helped my friend with money. 
3. They have no relation with us. 
4. The child is crying with fear. 

(ix) Use of  'Of And Off':
'Of ' is used to establish relation and 'Off' is used to opposite of 'on'. 
Examples:
1. He is afraid of snakes. 
2. Seema is fond of dancing. 
3. The patient died of malaria. 
4. He is off duty now. 
5. Switch off the lights. 
6. The cat jumped off the roof. 

(x) Use of Below and Under
'Below' is used to show no physical contact. 
'Under' is used to show physical contact. 
Examples:
1. They are below me in rank. 
2. The child put a five hundred rupee note under pillow. 

(xi) Use of Between, Among and Amongst:
'Between' is used to denote two. 
'Among' is used to denote more than two. 
'Amongst'  is used if it has a word beginning with vowel after it. 
Examples:
1. Divide this cake between Reena and Rahul. 
2. Go and stand between Harry and Henry. 
3. Distribute this sweet among the girls. 
4. Distribute this sweet amongst us. 

(xii) Use of Beside and Besides :
'Beside' is used for just near. 
'Besides' is used for 'in addition to'. 
Examples: 
1. My friend sat beside me. 
2. He ate chapati besides the rice. 

(xiii) Use of Till and To :
'Till' is used for time. 
'To' is used for place. 
Examples:
1. I shall study till 10 o'clock . 
2. He waited for you till it grew dark. 
3. We walked to the end of the market. 

(xiv) Use of By:
'By' is used to denote the means or agent. 
Examples:
1. He came here by an aeroplane. 
2. Learn this poem by heart. 
3. A man is known by his actions. 

Read the given sentences and study the proper use of the Prepositions-

2. He is senior to me. 
3. We deal in furniture. 
4. He has no liking for vegetables. 
5. They are angry with us. 
6. He is I'll with cholera. 
7. I was born on 4th August, 1985.
8. What is that made of? 
9. Beware of the dogs. 
10. Rene is married to Michael. 
11. Listen to what I am saying. 
12. He is good at singing. 
13. Pray for me. 
14. He prefers tea to coffee. 
15. She must apologize for her mistake.
